I know the laws are changing (or have changed) regarding the green bin being free but for now it is. The black bin is where the money gets thrown away. I could never understand it when people (my in laws) spoke about only putting their black bin out every couple of months. MONTHS??? Now I really understand why. They were recycling properly. Recycling all paper, plastic and cardboard as well as putting the same care in to how they recycled their food. That elusive little brown bin in their kitchen always intrigued me. To be fair to them they were always religious about it and it is probably one of the cleanest food bins I have ever seen (Peter's Dad is a bit of a hero in these ways).
This year we decided to make a conscious effort to follow their lead. We changed bin providers and got a better deal which was a good start. Then we started properly recycling and it really has made all the difference. I still had the issue with how we disposed of our organic food waste though. I couldn't really use one of those brown food bins on the floor because Billy would have it upside down in minutes.
And so I began to use this. A silver bowl on the kitchen counter. Doesn't it look appealing? No matter how clean the kitchen was it just always made it feel dirty.

This is the part where I tell you that I found a product that saved the day. I had heard a lot about Obeo and for some strange reason kept forgetting to pick them up. Fate would have it that I was given the opportunity to try them out and I was delighted to see what all the fuss was about. Isn't the packaging awesome?

The idea behind Obeo is that the little box used to dispose of all your food items is actually biodegradable itself. That means you can literally place the entire thing in to the brown bin in your garden once it is full. You can put vegetable and fruit peelings, egg shells, bread, cakes, pasta, rice and basically all food items that would normally make your bin soggy, smelly and ROTTEN. The design behind Obeo means that there is no bad smell either. It is just a neat brown box that sits on your counter top.

Obeo told me that one box should last about three days and they were spot on there. It was so nice to not have to think about emptying my bleak looking food bowl on a daily basis. I could just close up the Obeo box and put it straight in to the bin after a few days. It has genuinely revolutionised the way we recycle our food waste.

Fancy giving them a try? Obeo have very kindly offered one of my readers a FREE two month's supply of Obeo. To enter simply....
